REPAIRING THE SKI POLE USING CREATOR PRO 2

3D printing is a very useful technology. Our customer needed to repair a ski pole that broke while cross-country skiing. We undertook the repair, using a 3D printer FlashForge Creator Pro 2 to print the insert which would help to align both parts of the pole.

TO BUY A BRAND NEW PRODUCT OR TRY TO REPAIR THE EXISTING ONE?

When something breaks or cracks, we always ask ourselves whether to buy a new product or to repair the existing one. Many times the latter is not possible and we actually have to buy a new one, but with some ingenuity and knowledge, many things could be done. We did this too, using 3D printing as well.

The customer broke a carbon pole while cross-country skiing and was looking for a solution on how to fix it. Of course, we offered a repair using the 3D printer FlashForge Creator Pro 2.

IN WHICH PART OF THE PROCESS WAS THE 3D FLASHFORGE CREATOR PRO 2 PRINTER USEFUL?

We conceived the repair so that both ends of the broken pole were first roughly machined and then the diameter of the inner part of the pole was measured. The latter is hollow, so we designed and printed the insert, which fixed the pole after insertion for further repair and added to the stiffness when using it later.

A simple cylindrical-shaped insert was drawn in ThinkDesign and printed on a 3D printer FlashForge Creator Pro 2.

Printing of the insert took only one hour. It was necessary to grind it a little, as the pole is not the exact correct shape of the cylinder, but tapers towards the distal part. Nevertheless, we wanted the printed piece to be inserted as tightly as possible, as this will stabilize the bar as best as possible.

FINISHING TOUCHES

We connected both parts with carbon fiber and resin and left the resin to harden. The repair was almost certain, as the pole was already completely acceptable in terms of functional use, but for a better look, it was sanded and painted to protect the carbon from UV rays.

The pole became reusable to our customer and was only a few grams heavier than in its original form, but significantly more rigid on the broken part than before. We believe that the repair was quality carried out and the customer will be satisfied with it.
