FLASHFORGE 3D PRINTER COULD ALSO BE USED IN SPORTS

3D printing could be a simple solution to many problems. Here is an example of how useful a FlashForge 3D printer could be in sports as well. With the knowledge of the team and the use of FlashForge Adventurer 3, we created a duplicate piece, which is otherwise not available on the market as a standalone part. This happens to us many times in our daily lives and we usually have to buy the whole thing.

CREATING A DUPLICATE WITH FLASHFORGE 3D PRINTER

The use of a pump on two different bicycles is always a problem for cyclists, as only one holder is included in the set. What to do? Install it on one bike, and in the case of riding with another, place the pump in the already stuffed pocket of the cycling jersey? You could do that, but it is not very comfortable. At 3Way, we came to a better conclusion.

Rather than that, we decided to use a FlashForge 3D printer to create a duplicate of the pump holder. Of course, it is necessary to have knowledge, especially when it comes to measuring and designing a new piece.

MEASUREMENT

We removed the holder from the bike and cleaned it. Later on, the piece was measured with a caliper as there is no complicated shape. In case we needed a very accurate measurement, we would use a handheld or desktop 3D scanner, which is also available by us.

DATA PROCESSING AND DRAWING IN THINKDESIGN 3D PROGRAM

We imported the data into a ThinkDesign 3D program in which we created an identical copy of the pump holder. This part of the project requires the most knowledge. Creating something in a program requires precision. It is also important to know the different shapes, positioning and joining of parts to create a complete piece.

It is necessary to know which direction is optimal to place a 3D model before 3D printing. The piece must have enough strenght, so the direction of application of the material is important.

WHICH MATERIAL TO USE FOR 3D PRINTING?

Materials for 3D printing are selected according to customer needs and specifics. To make the prototype, we decided to use FlashForge PLA pro filament, which is biodegradable and made from natural materials. Firstly, it is a test of whether the duplicate created is suitable for a pump, and later we will select the material based on the requirements. The holder must be slightly flexible and strong at the same time not to deform when the pump is removed, but retains its original shape.

When choosing a 3D printer, you need to consider the size of the piece. Our holder is a small part, so we used the smallest 3D printer available in our demo center, FlashForge Adventurer 3. It could print a product measuring 15 x 15 x 15 centimeters, which is more than enough for our project. If the part was bigger, we would use the Guider IIs or Creator 3.

INSTALLING THE HOLDER WE CREATED WITH FLASHFORGE 3D PRINTER ON ANOTHER BIKE

As a final part, only the installation of the created pump holder was required. Of course, each prototype still needs to be tested. In our case, the fit of the pump to the holder made with the FlashForge 3D printer was perfect. The pump settled firmly and remained in place.

Based on the matching of the holder prototype and the pump, we would decide to use a tougher filament for the final productionNylon Carbon Fiber filament. Carbon fiber helps to prolong the life and strength of the product, but nylon adds the necessary elasticity. The combination of these two elements is ideal for 3D printing of the pump holder.
